By train

Just to confuse you, the station for South Woodham Ferrers is call Woodham Ferrers (the town's name was too long for the computerised ticket machines to handle). It is on Great Eastern's Southminster Branch Line, sometimes known as the Crouch Valley Line, that runs from Wickford to Southminster via Burnham on Crouch.

Most, but not all, the trains on weekdays and Saturdays run to and from Liverpool Street station in London. At other times the trains start from Wickford, which can be reached from Liverpool Street by catching a Southend Victoria train.

Passengers from Norwich, Colchester and Chelmsford directions have the option of changing at Shenfield. Passengers using the North London Line, the Docklands Light Railway, the Central Line, and the Jubilee Line Extension can board a Southminster train (or a Southend train to Wickford) at Stratford. Passengers arriving via the Channel Tunnel will one day have the option of connecting with a Southminster train at Stratford as well.

Travellers from Southend-on-Sea should catch a train for Liverpool Street from Southend Victoria station and change at Wickford.

By bus

South Woodham Ferrers is cut off on 3 sides by water and on the 4th by Eastern National.

The Number 36 bus links Woodham with Chelmsford with a half-hourly service during the day that fades away at night. It is only in the last few months that a Sunday service has been introduced.

Use of Chelmsford as a "night-spot" is limited by the time of the last bus, 22:20, being before the cinemas and theatres finish and long before the pubs close.

The buses serving the Dengie Peninsular are even rarer.

There are buses that allow the people from Tillingham, Bradwell, Maylandsea, Latchingdon, Burnham-on-Crouch, Cold Norton, Purleigh and Cock Clarks to reach South Woodham to do their shopping once a week, on a Thursday. While the passengers are shopping one of the buses goes off to Southend for a quick trip.

In contrast, South Woodham residents have the option to go shopping in Maldon on Tuesdays

People wanting to go to Basildon for the culture and the market are better served, with 4 buses a day. Passengers on this service (237) get to see the villages of Runwell and Ramsdon Bellhouse as well!

By plain

Getting directly to South Woodham Ferrers by plane is somewhat difficult - the two options being to crash land or to use a parachute !

There are two Airports nearby, Southend and Stansted.

Southend-on-Sea is not one of the world's great airports and so it has very few commercial flights. If you do manage to find a flight to Southend then you can reach South Woodham Ferrers by getting a train from the nearby Rochford station (in the London direction) and changing at Wickford.

Stansted, as one of the London airports, has a somewhat better service. Stansted can be reached by flights from all over the world - just ask your travel agent for London(Stansted) rather than London(Heathrow).

Stansted is about 30 miles (48km) from South Woodham Ferrers but there is no direct transport connection.

Your best option is to hire a car and drive via the A120 and A130 roads (see "Getting here by car").

The best public transport route is by rail. Take the "Stansted Express" to London(Liverpool Street) and then follow the "by train" instructions.

If you like a slower mode of transport then you can take a bus to Chelmsford and follow the "by bus" instructions.
