Guide to politics

Structure

On these pages I want to tell you about the structure of local government, the reality of how it all works (and why we don't get much money spent here in Woodham) and tell you a little about the issues that affect us.

I'm not suggesting that this is an unbiased account. It represents my experiences of local government and my views on the issues.

There are 3 levels of local government controling what goes on in South Woodham Ferrers : Essex County Council (who built the town), Chelmsford Borough Council, and South Woodham Ferrers Town Council.

Apart from having built the town (and left out so many facilities), Essex County Council is responsible for education, libraries, the fire service, the police, roads, and social services. For electoral purposes South Woodham forms part of the Danbury ward.

Chelmsford Borough Council is responsible for public health, refuse collection, planning and recreation. It also acts as the County Council's agent in highways matters.

South Woodham Ferrers Town Council is simply a Parish Council that has chosen to call itself by a grander name. It has very few responsibilities but is allowed to involve itself lots of aspects of town life.

Issues

There are a number of issues of importance to the people of South Woodham :
The swimming pool
Road safety within SWF
Getting into and out of SWF
The future of the town
Leisure facilities

Decisions being made

I hope to be able to provide the text of Council Agenda items relating to South Woodham Ferrers and to be able to report the decisions.
